As you can imagine, MSU Head Coach Bobby Williams was testy during his mid-week teleconference call. Here are some 'telling' quotes.
On if this was a good time to play Michigan - coming off the Iowa loss:
"Excuse me, I've got to laugh at that question because that is hilarious. I don't know if there's ever a good time to play them. These guys are playing pretty good. They had been on a roll and they hit a stumbling block last week, but they're playing a lot better than we're playing."
On whether there are bad feelings between the MSU and U-M programs:
"You're looking at two schools (between which) there's a rivalry. Players enjoy playing in this game. Coaches enjoy coaching in this game. And usually whoever wins that game ... one has a good feeling, a good taste. The other's going to have a pretty bad taste."
On MSU's focus in practice this week:
"My main focus is getting this team to play as a team. We have not played as a team, offensively, defensively and with special teams. Our whole emphasis this week is to play winning football and get us into position to win a game."
On whether he was feeling pressure to beat Michigan during a disappointing season:
"I feel the pressure to get this team to play better. It just so happens that this week, we're playing Michigan. (Winning) would give us a chance to build for the next game and try to turn a disappointing season into somewhat of a positive season."
On the Jeff Smoker suspension:
"Jeff is still enrolled here at Michigan State, and yes we've had contact with him. When he fulfills the terms of his suspension, he could come back. It's open-ended. It means he could come back sometime soon, or he might not come back."
Regarding rumors that more suspensions are on the horizon:
"It's not happening guys. I don't know where those rumors are going, but there's no truth to it."
[Note: there was in fact another suspension Thurs. night.]
