“We caught a flight from St. Louis at about 7:30 and we ended up getting (to Michigan) about 9:30 Monday morning,” Cassity recalled. “We went to the hotel and ate lunch with Coach Beilein and then went to talk with one of the athletic directors, Greg Harden. After that they showed us around all of the facilities for football, basketball, and hockey. Then we went to talk to Shari Acho, the academic advisor. She showed us around the new academic center for athletes that they built a few years ago. Then they showed us around campus a little bit, we went and watched practice, did some other stuff, and then got to meet the team. It was a good visit for sure.”
Getting a feel for his would-be teammates was one of Cassity’s priorities during the two days he was on campus. One Wolverine in particular made a very strong impression.
“I got to talk to some of the players and I got to hang out with Laval Lucas-Perry for a while,” said Cassity. “He showed me the dorms and stuff and then we went down to the union and ate. He was cool. He didn’t try to push anything. He just kind of showed what they had, which was good. The dorms were nice… everything was nice. It was a good time.”
Next on the to do list was sitting down for some one-on-one time with Beilein in order to getting a better feel for what his role would be on the team.
“We talked for a while and he showed me where I fit into the system and everything,” Cassity said. “He said he didn’t really recruit me for one position. He said I could play the one, the two, or the three. He said the kid that just committed (Zach Novak) is a pure shooter. He said he really wanted me and to head back and talk things over with the family. I told him I was going to visit Saint Louis and he said go ahead and to just let him know what we think. He said they’ve got another kid that might come in, so they’ve got two kids that they’re looking at but one scholarship. He said he was going to invite the other kid to campus and see what he had to say. He told the other kid (Justin Watts) that he wasn’t going to let him do anything until I got to see campus at least, so the other kid decided not to come the weekend before. That kid waited to see what I did. Now they think that kid is going to come visit. They’ll see what happens with him and see how it goes from there.”
Cassity’s decision timeline is still a bit up in the air, but it is possible that he reaches a definitive conclusion before any other prospects visit Michigan.
“I’m actually visiting Saint Louis this Friday and Saturday,” he said. “I’m not sure how quickly I’ll make a decision after that. I haven’t decided whether I’m going to make one more to Evansville or not. I might make one more after that. I’m really not sure yet. Right now Michigan is the only one of the three that I’ve visited, but it’s really nice. It’s definitely what I expected a Big Ten school to look like. It’s nice… that’s for sure.”
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Cassity in the coming days.
