Former LB Bobby Powers on U-M's La. Recruiting

Yours truly ran into former Wolverine linebacker Bobby Powers a couple days ago. Powers, a Michigan letter winner from 1991-94, was one of the two players whom Michigan landed in the 90's from River Ridge John Curtis Christian High School in the New Orleans area . I took the opportunity to chat with Powers about recruiting, particularly regarding a current Michigan recruit from John Curtis -- All American defensive lineman Carnell Stewart.

Bobby Powers was one of the two players Michigan landed in the 90's from John Curtis Christian High School in River Ridge, Louisiana -- the other being Chris Howard who was the starting running back on the '97 National Championship team. I took the opportunity to chat with Powers about Carnell Stewart, also about Powers own recruitment, and about the upcoming Minnesota game as well.

Regarding Carnell Carnell Stewart (6-5, 290 lbs., 4.8 in the 40, 415-lb. bench press, 2.8 GPA) from River Ridge, Louisiana, John Curtis Christian, The Insiders' #67 prospect.

"Carnell hasn't reached his potential yet. He'll play defensive tackle at the college level. Right now -- he's just a giant out there."

"With Fred Jackson sitting across the table recruiting him, Michigan always has a shot."

"When I talked to Carnell, I didn't even mention Michigan ... others around me at the time did, but I didn't at all."

"If Carnell decides to go to Michigan, that'd be great for him ... not just for the football, but also because of what you can learn about life there. Michigan was by far one of my best experiences in life ."

"LSU has it going now too with Nick Saban ... Charlie Moffett, who's an assistant there, was my strength coach at John Curtis."

Regarding Powers' own recruitment back in 1989-90.

"My final choices were Michigan and Notre Dame ... my test scores hadn't come in yet when I made my decision, and Notre Dame wouldn't sign me without them. Michigan did, and I got my score right afterward."

Finally, when Powers thinks of Minnesota, his mind goes where yours truly's does as well.

"My worry with Minnesota --it seems like we always got an injury against them. Trip Welbourne, Derrick Alexander ... every time it seemed."
