One of the pleasant surprises to Midwesterners at the Akron, Ohio Badger Sports/New Level/Scout.com 7-on-7 tournament was speed back/slot receiver Tavon Austin from Baltimore Dunbar (Akron 7-on-7 Highlights). What was not surprising was that soon after the performance Austin received a Michigan offer in the mail.
GoBlueWolverine reached the Dunbad Head Coach, Lawrence Smith, and asked him about Tavon.
Coach Smith, please describe Tavon as an athlete and a player for the Michigan fandom.
Coach Smith: "Tavon Austin is a phenomenal player who goes 100% all the time. He is a game changer who can create and make big plays. Tavon was named the Maryland state player of the year his sophomore and junior year in football so he is a special player. Along with that he is a three sports star who runs track and is the point guard for his basketball team."
What position or positions are the college coaches looking Tavon to play?
Coach Smith: "Most college coaches are looking for him at either slot receiver or running back. In the right system like a spread offense, he could play both and be very effective."
How many offers does Tavon have; and what is he looking for in the right school?
Coach Smith: "Right now Tavon has 12 offers. His family is taking their time and helping him in his decision, judging all the schools that have offered, and they want to give each one of them a fair opportunity to recruit Tavon. His mother of course is looking at him getting a good education and getting his degree. Getting a quality education is key because you never know what might happen at college."
Has Tavon gone to any unofficial visits; and what are his plans this summer?
Coach Smith: "Tavon went to West Virginia, Maryland, and Rutgers for unofficial visits so far and planning on taking summer trips to Virginia, Michigan, Nebraska, and Illinois so far. I am sure he will add more schools if needed."
What are going to be the deciding factors for Tavon?
Coach Smith: "Distance will not be a factor for him or his mother. They both realize that most players at the high school level do not make it to the NFL so his mother wants him to pick a school where he can get a great education so he can get a good job with his degree just in case football does not work out. They are looking for the best fit and where he can succeed."
Who will help Tavon decide on his future college destination?
Coach Smith: "Well besides me, his mother, and his cousin who played linebacker at Maryland who has been very instrumental in his life and has helped him keep on the right path."
What is the decision timeline for Tavon?
Coach Smith: "His mother wants him to try and get this done before the season started so he can enjoy his senior year, but that does not mean it will happen. I hope that he can get to the schools he is interested in this summer and start narrowing down schools."
