Will Toussaint be a "Devine" Influence?

Youngstown (OH) Liberty coach Jeff Whittaker compares star pupil Fitzgerald Toussaint to Noel Devine. One glimpse of the newest Michigan commitment's blazing speed and it's easy to see why. GoBlueWolverine chatted with Coach Whittaker about Toussaint's decision making process, what role Isaiah Bell's commitment played in the talented youngster's choice, the firmness of his commitment, and more.

Fitzgerald Toussaint Profile

GoBlueWolverine: Hey Coach, sounds like your program is having a good day today?

Coach Whittaker: “Yeah thanks a lot. He actually told me last night that he was planning on (committing today). He has been doing different visits at different universities to make sure he makes the right choice. We were big on that.”

GoBlueWolverine: What other universities did Fitz compare Michigan to?

Coach Whittaker: “Well we do not really like to talk about other schools since that will be a little unfair to those programs. All of these schools are great. He visited several other places so he could compare Michigan to them and he came away feeling Michigan was the best place for him. I can tell you that he had offers from several Big Ten programs and those types of schools.”

GoBlueWolverine: The last time we talked you said he was very interested in Michigan, but that he wanted to be sure it was the best choice. So he is completely committed to Michigan?

Coach Whittaker: “Yes he is completely committed to Michigan and that is why he waited a little longer than what Isaiah Bell did earlier. He wanted to compare other places to Michigan and we wanted to make sure he did not get star struck from his visit. We want them to be sure when they commit this early to a coach because that school is investing a lot of time and money with a scholarship for schooling. As we talked about before, we stress that when a kid commits to a program that he will not “flirt” with other schools. That is why we ask them to be sure before they do anything like committing. We like getting the families involved with recruiting. During the entire process we stress to the parents and students how important this decision is and not to take it lightly when committing to a school.”

GoBlueWolverine: Do you think Isaiah Bell’s decision to commit to Michigan had any impact on Fitz?

Coach Whittaker: “No. I think they’re two different people. Fitz is a very quiet kid He doesn’t say a whole lot. Isaiah and him made their own decisions. Fitz made his decision but took a little longer He visited some places after Michigan. They’re friends, but I wouldn’t say that they’re blood brothers or anything like that. I think they’re two different entities headed in the same direction.”

GoBlueWolverine: Did Michigan talk with him about how they see him fitting into their offense?

Coach Whittaker: “Yeah, as a tailback. They definitely like him as a tailback. He can catch, he can run, he has got speed. They believe that he has the right characteristics to fit that style of offense. I would say he is similar to the Noel Devine kid that Rich had down at West Virginia. He was the freshman that came in and lit up the scoreboard occasionally. He’s very very fast, not quite as big, but he can move. I think he ran a 10.58 electronic 100 meters as a sophomore.”

GoBlueWolverine: Now you have two players committed to Michigan, but you have another player in LB Julius Ferrell that is getting Division I looks as well. How is he recovering from his injury and how is his recruiting going?

Coach Whittaker: “Julius has recovered fully from his injury and the college coaches are really taking their time with him because they want to make sure he has recovered completely before offering him. He will have a big summer this year. Then the college coaches will be able to see him first hand. Isaiah and Fitzgerald are very happy that both of them will be attending the same school together and I am sure they will be talking to Julius about Michigan a lot more now since Fitz committed to Michigan.”
