Newsome Gives UM a Boost with McNeal

A quarterback can have a domino effect in a recruiting class, and the Michigan Wolverines may start to experience that phenomenon in the coming months now that Kevin Newsome is in the fold. His commitment has caught the attention of many of the Maize & Blue's targets, including Minneapolis (MN) Breck WR Bryce McNeal.

“That’s wonderful,” McNeal said regarding the Kevin Newsome’s commitment to Michigan. “He is one of the top five quarterbacks in country. He is obviously a great ball-player. You can tell that he is a kid that has his head on straight, which is kind of what I’m looking for. It would be cool to have him throw me the ball. It’s seems like a great addition now that he is in my class. We could come in and try to learn the ropes together.”

Michigan has been riding high on McNeal’s list since his late March visit to Ann Arbor, but the pool of contenders is getting deeper. Offers continue to roll in, with the latest coming from South Carolina and Auburn. With 16 scholarships already on the table, visits will play a major roll in identifying the cream of the crop. McNeal had planned a return trip to the Great Lake State in mid-April, but wasn’t able to make it. Despite that, the Wolverines, thanks to Newsome, have managed to strengthen their position.

“(Newsome committing) definitely boosted Michigan because I didn’t really know who would be throwing me the ball to me if I decided that’s where I was going to play,” he said. “Now knowing that Kevin Newsome is going there…. that’s a great addition to the package.”

“I’ve talked to (Michigan) about rescheduling,” McNeal continued, “but we haven’t really set a date yet.”

So is he ready to name Michigan his leader? Is he on the verge a making his choice?

“Not as of right now,” McNeal reported. “I have a top five, but I’m not sure I want to come out with it yet. I’m going to take some visits. I don’t want to (commit somewhere and take visits to other schools) because I think in a way that’s not honest to the institution that I commit to. I think I’m either going to (commit) and not take any officials at all, or take all five of my officials and then decide. My plan right now is I’m just going to take some unofficials (this summer), and relax. I’m not sure which schools yet. I do know that at the end of this month I’m going to Clemson.”

“I think I’ll start trimming it down this summer,” he later added. “I think I’ll make my decision sometime before the season… around two-a-day time.”
