Muck City's Vincent Smith likes Michigan

With a new football staff in place, Michigan fans are being treated to new recruiting hotbeds for future Wolverines. One such fertile spot is Pahokee, in SE Florida, which has already produced 4-star slot WR Martavious Odoms. And, as U-M fans are learning, there are at least three Muck City footballers on the 08-09 Wolverine recruiting radar screen: today GBW brings you speed back Vincent Smith.

Pahokee, Florida has already reaped gold for the Wolverines in the form of 4-star slot-dot Martavious Odoms. And there are at least three Muck City footballers on the 08-09 Wolverine recruiting radar screen: slot WR Nu'Keese Richardson, LB/S Brandin Hawthorne, and RB/slot Vincent Smith (see GBW's stories yesterday on Richardson and scouting Richardson and Hawthorne).

The athletes of Pahokee have been featured by ESPN, which pointed out that legend has it chasing rabbits through the mud helps with their speed and quickness. Vincent Smith, a 5'8 170 pound running back, confirmed the story to GoBlueWolverine. "I saw the feature on ESPN and it's true: we do chase rabbits and it definitely helps our quickness on the football field. When there is nothing to do we go out and it's like a workout; it keeps us busy."

New-Michigan has had the speedy Smith in its sights for a long time. "Coach (Rod) Smith has been looking at me since my freshman year. He offered me a scholarship to Michigan. I also have offers from Minnesota, Tennessee and Southern Mississippi."

Asked about favorite schools growing up, Smith admitted that he favored Florida State and still does, but he has noticed that the Seminoles have fallen on a couple of tough seasons. Michigan is a school that Vincent is looking at hard, and that attention didn't start with a new regime, "I've always liked Michigan," he said." "I like the offense they run and how they run the ball."

When asked if Odoms commitment to Michigan will have an affect on his recruitment, Vincent says "Martavious is letting us do our own thing, He hasn't been pushing us to follow him."

Smith, however, intends to take a serious look at following his older teammate. "I'm trying to visit Michigan soon; I've got to talk to my coach. Martavious will be up there in June and I am trying to come then, maybe during one of the camps or something; I'm not sure."

Meanwhile, in Florida high school spring ball is still not over. "We have a spring game coming up," Smith said, "playing Dwyer High School. So I'm getting ready for that."

Smith shared playing time with college freshman Janoris Jenkins last season but anticipates lots of playing time at running back this year for the Blue Devils. "I split time with Janoris who is playing for Florida; we both ran the ball. I will probably play a little slot too this season."

Michigan fans need to get familiar with the kids from Muck City because the Wolverine coaching staff is making it a priority. Vincent Smith is going to be one of the top running backs in the state of Florida and with his speed and explosiveness.

As Smith himself pointed out to GBW: "I think us Florida kids bring excitement, speed and all types of stuff."
