Brown Looking for That Special Feeling

The University of Michigan is still hunting for another outside receiver for the 2009 recruiting class, and Memphis (TN) Harding Academy wideout Marlon Brown remains one of their targets. A number of other big time programs have prioritized this heavily recruited prospect and separated themselves a bit from the pack. Is Michigan among them?

For some recruits, the reason for settling on a particular college isn’t something they can put their finger on.  They can’t explain it… they just know that a particular school has that special something.   In the case of Marlon Brown, the 6-5 wide out from Harding Academy in Memphis, TN, that inexplicable something will be one of the keys to his choice as well.

“It’s just a feeling I will get,” Brown said when asked to describe his decision criteria.

With over 30 offers to his credit, there are a number of schools trying to figure out how to evoke that feeling.   Distance and style of play are a few factors that that won’t have much bearing, there are a few others that will.

Said Brown, “I just want to get on the field early and get to play.  I want good academics plus a good head coach and a good receiver coach.”

One of the schools trying to sell all of those ingredients is the University of Michigan.  He has been in contact with the Wolverines and had a chance to speak to Rich Rodriquez a few weeks back.

“Coach Rod is real cool and laid back,” Brown said.  “We talked about the school and what it was all about. I also had a chance to talk with Coach Tony Dews recently, and we talked about me making plays and about the school as well.”

Though Brown is hesitant to name a leader, it is clear that the Wolverine have some ground to make up on a few other schools.   He is very interested in Michigan but he said there are other schools bringing it hard and bringing it often.

“Man recruiting is crazy right now it is going real crazy,” Brown said.  “Right now Tennessee, Florida, LSU and Georgia are really bringing it. They are emailing me, calling me, and sending personal handwritten notes.  I would say right now those four are really bringing the heat”.

The good news for Michigan (and the other schools not among those four) is Brown will not be choosing a school anytime soon.

“I will be making my decision on signing day,” he reported.

In the meantime, Brown plans to focus on honing his skills during the summer months.

“I am going to be working on my game,” he said.  “I need to get off the ball quicker. As far as camps I will be going to the USC camp on June 24.”
