Jones Sees Familiar Face at UM

Bastrop (LA) DE DeQuinta Jones doesn't know much about Michigan, but he definitely knows a lot about one of its coaches. Because of that relationship, the Wolverines are one of the top teams on his list.

"(Last season) was good," Jones said.  "We won state again.  I played defensive end and defensive tackle.  My game is I'm a hard working person and a great football player."

The scholarship offer Michigan extended earlier this year suggests that the Wolverines agree with that assessment.

"It was in May before I got out of school," Jones recalled.  "I think I'm going to go up there for a visit."

The Maize & Blue has a legitimate chance in this fight thanks to Jones' pre-existing relationship with linebackers coach, Jay Hopson.

"I know him pretty good from when he was at Southern Miss, the school my brother goes to," Jones explained.  "(Hopson) recruited him. I think (Hopson) is a pretty good dude.  We know each other pretty good."

Michigan isn't the only program that has made Jones a priority.  A few schools closer to home have turned up the heat as well.

"I have offers from Arkansas, TCU, Alabama… and I can't think of who else right now," he reported.

As is the case for many other southern prospects contemplating playing college ball in the north, the topic of weather, and more specifically snow, has come up.

"I did see (snow) one year, but it was a while ago," Jones recalled.  "I couldn't believe it (laughing).  But I think I could deal with it."

With distance and climate as minimal factors, other more significant criteria have taken shape.

"The academics and the wins," Jones said matter-of-factly.  "I'll look at the winning percentage."

While the Wolverines stack up well in those categories, they are far from a shoe in to land the Bayou star.

"I don't have a leader right now," he reported.  "I'd say my top five is Michigan, Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, and Mississippi State.  I don't know when I'll make my decision.  I may wait until signing day.  I don't know."
