U-M Complete Package for Smith & Hawthorne

Pahokee (Fl.) teammates, RB Vincent Smith and LB Brandin Hawthorne announced that they will be attending the University of Michigan earlier this afternoon. Academics, athletics, and Martavious Odoms were the big factors for pledges #15 and #16 to the Wolverines' 2009 class.

"I went over it with my family and my brother," Smith said to GoBlueWolverine at 3:00 PM.  "I had a long talk about it with my family and I decided on Michigan.  I let Coach Smith know this morning.  He said to call him after we're done.  He was excited that I'm going to be a Wolverine.  I'm going to call Coach Rodriguez later today."

Added Hawthorne, "For me it came down to the coaches, the players, and just the atmosphere.  Another thing is what my former teammate (Martavious Odoms) has been telling me."

The total package at Michigan was the determining factor for Smith as well.

"Coach Rodriguez is a cool coach and I feel like he is going to be there for me," he said. "The offense is going to fit me well, the education part is good, so I thought Michigan was a good school overall."

Another feather in Michigan's cap was the non-pushy approach employed by Odoms.  The Wolverine freshman wideout offered his teammates advice without telling them what they should do.

"He was just proud of us," Smith explained.  "He always said whatever we do and wherever we go, to just work hard.  He told us to just stay humble, keep our heads on straight, go to class, and everything is going to come."

That said, Odoms didn't always practice complete neutrality.  He did manage to put in a few good words for the Maize & Blue.

"He said that it's real nice up there," Hawthorne said regarding his conversations with Odoms.  "He said that he thought that it would be a nice place for me to come.  (The Michigan coaches) told me to look at Martavious and see how he came up.  They didn't guarantee me a spot, but they said if I come and show that I'll give my all, be disciplined, and just be steady, there's a chance that I'll get on the field as a freshman."

Until the Pahokee duo actually matriculates to Michigan, Odoms warned them to be on guard.

"Martavious said the pressure just began," said Hawthorne.  "Now (that they've committed) is when the scouts really start getting hard on you."

With plans to still take visits, the Wolverines-to-be are destined to feel significant heat from other programs.

"I'm going to Iowa State, Louisville, West Virginia, and Tennessee," reported Hawthorne.  "I'm going up (to Michigan) when they play Michigan State."

The visit topic will almost certainly come up in conversations with Rodriguez later today if Smith's interaction with Michigan QB coach Rod Smith this morning is any indicator.

"(Coach Smith) said when I get there we‘re going to talk about (taking other visits)," said Vincent.  "He wants me to visit Michigan first, so I'm going to visit Michigan first and we're going to talk about it when I get there.  I haven't set up a date yet, but when I get through committing, I'm going to set all that up after the game.

Michigan fans can check out Hawthorne and Smith in action tomorrow on ESPN, as Pahokee will take on Olive Branch (MS) at 1PM.
