An All-Star Night

It was a great night for the University of Michigan at the US Army All-Star Game: Prescott Burgess announcing for U-M, great games by several Michigan commitments, Burgess and Ryan Mundy on stage together in front of the national press at the post game press conference, and 'hanging' with the East coaches and players in the winning locker room.

Here is my 'during the game' report.

First the game. For those who didn't see it, the game was a 47-3 East blowout. East quarterback Chris Leak was game MVP -- Leak was 7 for 12 passing with three touchdowns in a game ready-made for his open field skills. Michigan commitment Clayton Richard also threw a 20+ yard touchdown pass.

Defensively, the East smothered with West's passing attack (led by Kyle Wright) with good defensive line pressure and GREAT secondary coverage, led by future Wolverines Ryan Mundy and Prescott Burgess. Burgess led the East in tackles with four crunching blows, and had an interception as well on a ball he simply wrestled away from the defender. And Mundy led both teams in interceptions with two, and probably played the most minutes of any East defender.

East place kicker (and Michigan commitment) Garrett Rivas was drilling 50-yarders in pre-game, and just missed a 35+-yard field goal in the game.

On the West side, Michigan commitment Anton Campbell was the defensive captain and, like Mundy, played the most minutes of any West defender. Campbell led his team in tackles with five, and also played pass coverage well, although he was 'burned' for a touchdown on a perfectly thrown pass by Chris Leak on a play where Campbell had the receiver blanketed but Leak made an absolutely perfect throw. Michigan commitment Leon Hall played his cornerback position well, making two tackles, altho he did give up one touchdown pass. Commitment Will Paul had to play out of position at middle linebacker -- Will played a lot of minutes, and held his own well.

We will have photos from the game over the next few days.

During the game, the 'extra-curricular' activity of most interest to Michigan fans was Prescott Burgess' commitment to the Wolverines! Yours truly was right there on the sidelines, watching with delight during a timeout as Prescott, with the ESPN sideline announcer at his side, slowly opened a gym bag and pulled out -- a Michigan hat! Stay tuned for our photo of Prescott wearing his M-hat!
