Maclin Was Waiting on Michigan

Heading into the evaluation period, Memphis (TN) Ridgeway high LB Justin Maclin was already one of the most heavily recruited linebackers in the south. Despite that, he was still hoping to hear from a number of other top programs, including the University of Michigan. The Wolverines answered his call recently and are now one of the prime contenders on his list.

Sam Webb:  How did your season go last year?

Justin Maclin:  "It went real good.  I had 95 tackles and 19 sacks."

Sam Webb:  Give me a scouting report.  Break down your game for folks that haven't seen you play?

Justin Maclin:  "I'm fast.   I play hard all the way to the ball no matter how far away it is; I just want to make plays."

Sam Webb:  Let's talk about recruiting.  When did your Michigan offer come down?

Justin Maclin:  "It came like two weeks ago.  The coach came up here this week, on Monday."

Sam Webb:  Was it a surprise or had Michigan been on you all along?

Justin Maclin:  "It was a surprise.  I haven't really been hearing from them.  It was an offer I wanted."

Sam Webb:  What is it about Michigan that you like so much?

Justin Maclin:  "Tradition.  I feel like they going to be able to be good in a few years with Rich Rodriguez.  They got a lot to look up for."

Sam Webb:  Do you have any familiarity with or ties to the state of Michigan?

Justin Maclin:  "I've got a few friends that live in Michigan - my momma does."

Sam Webb:  So how many offers do you have at this point?

Justin Maclin:  "About 15."

Sam Webb:  Of those 15, have any of those schools started to separate themselves from the pack?

Justin Maclin:  "No they're all pretty even right now."

Sam Webb:  Have you been able to get out on any visits yet?

Justin Maclin:  "I took visits to LSU, Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee.  Those are the only four schools right now."

Sam Webb:  You just named four schools that are all relatively warm weather.  How do you feel about schools where it gets a little bit colder?

Justin Maclin:  "I'm good with the cold.  I've got cramping problems (laughing).  (The cold) would be real nice."

Sam Webb:  When you get ready to sit down and make your choice, your final decision; what are going to be the most significant factors in that choice?

Justin Maclin:  "How soon I'll be able to play, academics, and is it going to be up to par with the elite schools.  I am going to be able to win a national championship and go to bowl games.  I'll also look at my relationship with the coaches and how I am around the players."

Sam Webb:  What is Michigan telling to you about that playing time situation?

Justin Maclin:  "They just say if I work hard and do what I have to do, I don't have to worry about playing time, I'm going to get it."

Sam Webb:  Do you have a timeline for when you'd like to make your decision?

Sam Webb:  Have any of those All American games called you?

Justin Maclin:  "Yeah the Under Armour and the Army game."

Sam Webb:  Do you know which one you going to play in yet?

Justin Maclin:  "I'm not sure yet.  I think I might play in the Army one."

Sam Webb:  Final question… you said the Michigan was an offer that you were looking to get.  Do you think that you are going to visit Ann Arbor?

Justin Maclin:  "Yes.  I'm thinking right now that I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up visiting Michigan."
