Yours truly called the home of All-American wide receiver/cornerback Antonio Cromartie (Jan 10 official visit, 6-4, 200 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 10.7 100 meters, 2.5 GPA) from Tallahassee, Fla., Lincoln. Mrs. Cromartie answered. "Did you say you're a Michigan coach? Antonio's not here but let me give you his cell number. He's definitely coming up tomorrow!"
No, I'm a reporter for a Michigan Magzine and web site, Go Blue Wolverine.
"Okay. Well, he's looking forward to visiting Michigan!"
Mrs. Cromartie gave me Antonio's cell number, and I called - no answer. I did not leave a voice mail message. And so it was much to my surprise, when a half hour later he called back from his cell phone!
Thanks for calling back Antonio. Are you coming up to Michigan tomorrow?
"Yes sir I am. It's my second visit -- I visited Auburn already."
Is there really any chance of you leaving Florida to go North to school?
"There is a big chance ... (then almost under his breath ...) a huge chance."
Didn't you tell me before that you were a Michigan fan growing up?
"Yes sir. I followed them."
So what are you looking for when you come up for your visit?
"I want to see what the coaches have to say. And I want to see how the players are around each other."
What position has Michigan said you'd play?
"They've told me I could play both ways there, cornerback and receiver."
In the three weeks after Michigan Cromartie visits Florida (Jan. 17), Miami (Jan. 24) and Florida State (Jan. 31). Cromartie has a brother at Florida, and an uncle who played at Auburn, and he committed last year to Florida State (when it looked like he'd be graduating last year).
As a senior TheInsiders's #28 prospect scored 16 touchdowns on offense and made seven interceptions on defense as Lincoln finished 12-1-1, losing in the 4A semi-finals.
