In the mind of Leander, TX DE Holmes Onwukaife there is little doubt about where his future will best be spent. Michigan is the place he wants to be and last season's 3-9 record had absolutely no bearing on that feeling.
"Last season has Coach Rodriguez first year, but I was looking at what they are doing and the positive direction they are moving towards," said Onwukaife. "That is why I plan on going there."
There were a number of factors that went into that choice, but the most significant was his strong relationship with his Michigan recruiter, Fred Jackson.
"Coach Jackson and I have formed a very close bond with each other," Onwukaife stated. "He has been down to see me three times this spring. Coach Jackson also e-mails me regularly on a regular basis to let me know what is going on up at Michigan."
The Cedar Park prospect also formed a relationship with some of the commitments and current players on the team.
"I have talked with Steve Hopkins, Devin Gardner, Roy Roundtree and Will Campbell," he reported. "We have been talking on Facebook and they have been great. Devin told me that I need to come because big things are going to happen up there. Roy Roundtree said academics are very important and that they want you to succeed in the classroom first. Will Campbell was telling me everything he liked about Michigan. Steve Hopkins is from Texas and we have a lot in common he is going up there from Texas so I will have someone there that I know."
There is one more relationship that was important to the whole process, and it had nothing to do with football.
"My cousin works for the University of Michigan and my parents and I felt that I would have someone to look after while I am there. That played a great deal with my parents in my decision to come to Michigan."
Holmes is certainly looking forward to formally committing to Michigan, but there is one last step that still needs to take place. He must talk it over with Rich Rodriguez.
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Onwukaife in the near future.
