Amaker and Players Discuss Victory Over Gophers

The Wolverines extended their winning streak to twelve games with a thrilling victory over Minnesota. After the game, head coach Tommy Amaker, LaVell Blanchard, and Bernard Robinson Jr. met with the press to discuss the victory, and their preparation for Michigan State. Minnesota Head Coach Dan Monson also provided comments on the game.

Michigan Head Coach Tommy Amaker

Opening statement:

"First of all it was very exciting to have the kind of atmosphere we had out there. It was a great Big Ten battle. [LaVell Blanchard] was phenomenal. We were able to hit the free throws late, get the rebounds, and hit the big shot when we had to. It was a great team win."

On Bernard Robinson Jr. and LaVell Blanchard:

"I don't know if I have ever seen them complement each other the way they did tonight, and they did it at different times. In the first half Bernard went to the rim with authority and he grabbed six rebounds. For one of our wings to do that shows the intensity he brings to this team. LaVell stepped up in the second have and ignited us with a few big three-pointers and he hit the free throws at the end to seal the victory."

On Michigan's win streak:

"You are seeing a team that believes. Right now this is a team that both believes and expects to win. Those are two different things and it is great to see our kids doing both."

On the atmosphere in Crisler Arena:

"I am hoping that we can get it even louder, but that was phenomenal tonight. It ignites our players and it is great to see our players react to the fans. The fans are a big part of this team."

On playing Michigan State Sunday:

"We certainly know how great a program they have had the past few years. We respect what Coach (Tom) Izzo has done at Michigan State, but we will start preparation for them tomorrow, but this was a great win for us tonight against a very good Big Ten opponent in Minnesota."

LaVell Blanchard

On his offenseive performance:

"My teammates set up some great screens tonight and found me when I was open."

On the defense keeping them in the game in the first half:

"Coach Amaker has taught us to take passion and pride in our defense and it helped keep us in the game when our shots weren't falling."

On the fans at Crisler:

"The crowd has been very big for us this year. They have helped us out through good times and bad times this year."

On how he feels going into the Michigan State game:

"We haven't really focused on Michigan State yet; we have just been focused on Minnesota."

Bernard Robinson Jr.

On the crowd:

"They played a big part for us tonight; they gave us a boost. When things aren't going right the crowd can give you a surge."

On the momentum that this gives the team going into the Michigan State game:

"It gives us a lot of momentum. Michigan State is a good team. We haven't been worried about them until now. This gives us a good boost going into this game."

On his double-double:

"It was a matter of me hustling and getting the rebounds. It just seemed to happen like that. We played a good team, and I was grateful to help our team."

Minnesota Head Coach Dan Monson

Opening statement:

"That was disappointing. It was a game I thought we could win and we didn't get it done. We turned the ball over, didn't hit our shots and didn't hit free throws when we got to the line. We just didn't do the things we need to win a game on the road."

On Michigan's zone defense:

"Their zone got us out of rhythm. We stood around the perimeter and waited for things to happen. We are just not aggressive in there. Rick Rickert only shot one free throw and our other big guys didn't get to the line either. We just didn't get it done today. They did a good job of changing up their defenses, but a large part was us not getting it done on offense."
