Michigan Hot on Ferrell's Trail

Indianapolis (IN) Park Tudor PG Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell is considered by many to be one of the top floor generals in the class of 2012. This cat-quick youngster was one of the standout performers at Michigan's summer camp and now the Wolverines are among those in hot pursuit.

Sam Webb:  Your dad told me that you had a bunch of visitors at your workout this morning?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Yeah I did.  I think there were two coaches from Notre Dame, one from Washington, one from Purdue and then one from Michigan.  Coach Beilein from Michigan, the head coach from Purdue, assistant from Washington and I think those were assistants for Notre Dame."

Sam Webb:  You went up to Michigan for that camp.  Let's go back to that for a second; what was that experience like?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "I definitely liked it.  I definitely like the gym and the atmosphere over it.  I felt I had a lot of fun.  I definitely want to come back for another camp."

Sam Webb:  I know you made it back a few weeks ago for a football game.  How was that?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "I've been down to Michigan once for the Michigan-Notre Dame game.
It was great – awesome.  It was wild."

Sam Webb:  Did you get a chance while you where there any open gym with the guys?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "I think they played before the game and I came like an hour before the game.  They said I could come down and scrimmage."

Sam Webb:  Did you notice while you were on the AAU circuit this summer; did you notice Michigan coaches following you around?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Yes I did.  I can't remember the first time Beilein came to see me play.  It might have been the Hoosier Shootout.  It was actually one of the first tournaments, but can't really remember though.  I saw Beilein again at the Peach Jam and I think that was the last time; oh now, I saw a Michigan assistant at the Ft. Wayne, the last tournament of the AAU season."

Sam Webb:  Your dad said that (Michigan assistant) Coach (John) Mahoney  is your Michigan recruiter.  What has he said to you about the Wolverines' interest level?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "The last time I talked to him, he talked about how they had a commit a 2011 guard, but he told me that he wasn't a (pure) point guard, so they were still real interested in me."

Sam Webb:  As far as other schools are concerned, I it is common knowledge that Purdue has offered.  Have any other schools offered you scholarships up to this point?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Butler and Ohio State has."

Sam Webb:  Now did you grow up a fan of any particular school?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Not really."

Sam Webb:  who are the top schools on your list just at this point and time?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "I really couldn't say."

Sam Webb:  What schools are you considering right now?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "I really like Michigan because of the law program really. I want to study law when I go to college."

Sam Webb:  What about Purdue, Ohio State and Butler… what do you like about those programs?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Well Butler is definitely close to home and is a private school; I like that.  Ohio State, I know they've had some great players and so I feel like if I go there I can become one those players.  Purdue, I like how they play.  They actually have a guard there now who says that when he leaves, I'll be stepping in and being a four year starter.  Give me the ball and let me run the team, so I definitely like that."

Sam Webb:  I know it's still very early for you, but what are the things that you're looking for in a coach; what are the things that you're looking for in a school that are going to make that one school stand out above the rest?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "I want to have a coach that recruits players that want to play.  I don't like playing around a group of guys that aren't really committed to the team.  In the school, I'd say nothing really in particular.  Academics have to be good I know that, that's pretty much it."

Sam Webb:  Nothing in the way of a particular style or a system that you're looking for?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Definitely a style that wants to push.  Not a half court setting.  Like I know Butler is a half court kind of team.  Actually had a coach in high school my freshman year, Darnell Archey, and he went to Butler."

Sam Webb:  You want to get up and down a little bit more?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Yeah, yeah."

Sam Webb:  You're obviously really familiar with Butler; did you watch Purdue, Ohio State and/or Michigan very much over the past couple of seasons?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "I watched Ohio State when Greg Oden and Mike Conley were there.  Definitely watched Mike Conley, I like the way he plays.  I haven't really watched Purdue or Michigan."

Sam Webb:  I mentioned timeline, do you have sort of a plan; do you and your dad have sort of a plan for how you'd like this to play out; do you want to make a decision your junior year, do you want to wait until your senior year; have you thought about that at all?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Not really.  I think after next summer probably is when I'm going to make my decision."

Sam Webb:  So you've already made plans right now, preliminary plans to make it back to Michigan for camp next summer?

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell:  "Yes I have."
