Ouimet on Austin-To-Seattle

Yesterday (Friday) was U-M Assistant Teryl Austin's last day at Michigan -- he took a job with the Seattle Seahawks. Former U-M asst. recruiting coordinator Mark Ouimet played basketball with Austin a couple days before and got 'the big hint'. We asked Mark about Austin's move: why he did it, and the ramifications for Michigan -- both on the field and in recruiting.

"I was playing basketball with Teryl Wednesday, and he gave me a big hint that something was about to happen -- although I have to admit the hint didn't dawn on me until I got home that night."

"This is simply a career move up for Teryl, going to the pros, the Seattle Seahawks. He wants to be a defensive coordinator, and this is a move towards that. And of course pro money is a lot better too for the Austins and their five children."

"Michigan will miss him - a lot - because he really was getting the defensive backfield to play better and better this past season."

"Teryl also had those really strong Pittsburgh recruiting connections (he played at Pitt), that helped bring Marlin Jackson, Steve Breaston and Ryan Mundy to Michigan. That will be missed."

"Now the question is, who will replace Austin? I wouldn't be surprised if they interview four candidates. Three of them may be: Curt Mallory (former Michigan CB now coaching DB's at Indiana), Doug Mallory (former Michigan safety now coaching DB's at Oklahoma State), and Corwin Brown (former Michigan DB now coaching special teams at Virginia). The Mallories have Illinois and Indiana connections, and Brown grew up in Chicago."
