The Latest on Pahokee DL Richard Ash

The standout defensive product from Pahokee (FL) recently tripped to Michigan, and the WVA commit has since gone absent from the media. However, GoBlueWolverine caught up with his high school coach to see where the Wolverines stand with yet another Muck City prospect.

Richard Ash is one of the top players on the defensive side of the ball for the Pahokee (FL) Blue Devils. A 6'4", 270 pound defensive tackle, Ash had a good senior year for his team, according to his high school coach Blaze Thompson.

"He had a very solid season," Thompson told GoBlueWolverine. "He's very dependable. He's got a high motor, and he's very athletic."

Due to those abilities, schools from across the country have extended scholarship offers. Those offers have resulted in a commitment to West Virginia, however, a few days after his commitment to the Mountaineers, Ash made an official trip to Michigan.

"I had a sit down with him about his visit to Michigan, and he was excited about it. He had a good time, and right now he's still committed to West Virginia, but he has an open mind, and he's thinking about the opportunity at Michigan."

Due to the quick visit, many have called into question the solidity of Ash's commitment to West Virginia. It's something that Thompson says isn't on firm ground.

"Obviously if he's traveling, he's not solid. But West Virginia is a good school, and they have an opportunity like Michigan does. Right now we have a couple players at Michigan, three of them to be exact, and they may have an impact on him as well."

Those three players are Martavious Odoms, Brandin Hawthorne and Vincent Smith, and the former Blue Devils will definitely play into Ash's mind as he continues his recruitment.

"I think there will be an impact, although it may be marginal. His ability to play and where they plan on playing him will be the biggest influence on whether he decides to go there."

As it is seemingly coming down to a two team race between Michigan and West Virginia, the Wolverines are hot on the trail, recently having Coach Rod Smith down for a visit with Ash directly after his official visit.

"I haven't had a chance to talk personally to Coach Smith, but we've texted a few times. And I talked a little bit to Richard today about Coach Smith's visit, but not necessarily specifically about that though. It was more about where his mind was and that kind of thing. But I would prefer my conversation with Richard to stay private."
