Instate Top Ten: First Pass

The junior instate class is, as you may have noticed, deeper than usual in 'possible top ten' prospects. Here is a first attempt at a top ten -- including some surprises.

Normally at this stage (coming out of a junior season, but before rising-senior summer camps) an instate football class may have around 7-8 kids vying for 'top five' status, with around 5-7 more vying for the 'top ten'. This year's class is different -- it seems to have fewer 'top five' caliber kids, but more 'top ten-ers'. Right now it looks like there may be only 3-4 vying for 'top five', but as many as 18-20 vying for 'top ten'. One indication of this: Michigan has not as far as we know given out any instate scholarship offers (other than to Morgan Trent of course). U-M may be hoping to use it's summer camp as a real 'testing ground' this year, even moreso than usual.

One knowledgable person close to the Michigan high school scene has sent me his early instate top ten -- and there are a couple surprises in it. Here it is, along with five more he considers to be likely Michigan recruits as well.

An Instate Top Ten.
1. Grand Rapids Creston's RB Justin Hoskins (6-0, 195 lbs., 4.35 in the 40).
2. Detroit Renaissance's DE/TE/LB Ronald Talley (6-4, 235 lbs.).
3. Lake Orion's LB Roger Allison (6-2, 225 lbs., 4.7 in the 40).
4. Detroit MacKenzie's RB Fred Wilson (5-11, 210 lbs., 4.5 in the 40). (This one is a bit of a surprise, but he impressed at the U-M camp last summer, before having an injury-hampered junior season).
5. Orchard Lake St. Mary's WR Morgan Trent (6-0, 175 lbs., 4.4 in the 40).
6. Detroit Crockett's LB John Thompson (6-2, 230 lbs., 4.6 in the 40). (Another bit of a surprise; we'll see if it holds up).
7. Detroit King's DL Bernard Faithful (6-4, 230 lbs.).
8. Detroit Henry Ford's LB Dwayne Holmes (6-3, 240 lbs.). (Ford kids are not usually U-M recruits, but his placement in the top ten is not a surprise).
9. Bay City Central's OL Alex Mitchell (6-5, 310 lbs.).
10. Det. Country Day's QB Earnest Jackson (6-3, 190, 4.5 in the 40). (Again not a surprise because but his athleticism has impressed, but will U-M be able to attract his attention?).

Players not in the Top 10 who, in our 'knowledgable person's' opinion, could be Michigan recruits.

- Saginaw's RB/DB DeMarcus Laury (5-11, 205 lbs., 4.5 in the 40). (Will he be a RB prospect, or DB?).
- Detroit Redford's Jamaal Lock (6-7, 235 lbs., 4.65 in the 40).
- Detroit King's LB Wendell Brown (6-1, 225 lbs.).
- Lake Orion's OL Trent Varva (6-3, 300 lbs.).
- Detroit Cass Tech's DL Vernon Gholston (6-4, 250, 4.6 in the 40).

Just FYI, here is the rest of our list of 'Top Ten Candidates':

- Detroit Cass Tech's Ath Allen Langford (6-0, 190 lbs., 4.6 in the 40)

- Detroit MacKenzie's OL Demarco Hughes (6-4, 280 lbs., 4.8 in the 40)

- Detroit Pershing's DL/LB Quintin Gray 6-3, 235 lbs., 4.8 in the 40)
- Detroit Pershing's DL Carvin Nash (6-3, 265 lbs., 4.8 in the 40)

- Saginaw's LB Carthion Bibbs (6-1, 225 lbs., 4.5 in the 40)

- Southfield Lathrup's DL Dewayne Roland (6-4, 180 lbs., 4.8 in the 40)
- Southfield's DB Isaac Price (6-4, 195 lbs., 4.5 in the 40)

- Grand Ledge's OL Blake Botek (6-3, 300 lbs., 5.1 in the 40)

- East Lansing's TE Brad Jones (6-4, 215 lbs.)
