Maryland Kids Highlight Badger Sport 7 on 7

It's safe to say that kids from the Maryland/DC area take football very seriously. After being issued a proclamation and state flag by Governor Martin O'Malley, Maryland sent two teams to compete in the Badger Sports/New Level Athletics 7 on 7 tournament inside the Bubble at Rutgers University.

Maryland Team 1 was comprised of a very talented roster which featured top prospects from schools such as DeMatha, Good Counsel, and Gilman. Darius Jennings, Vincent Groce, and Darien Harris are just some of the notable names from a stacked Maryland 1 team.

Maryland Team 1 proved to be a tough matchup on day 1, easily defeating every team they faced. That changed when they ran into a talented Virginia team, which boasted a number of top recruits. In what was a tightly contested battle, Maryland Team 1 suffered their first loss, by one point. After that loss, Maryland Team 1 was never the same.

On Sunday, the tournament was no longer round robin, changing to single elimination. Maryland Team 1 struggled offensively, but managed to get by New Jersey Team 2 on a last second hail-mary that was caught in the corner of the endzone by Stefon Diggs. They weren't so lucky the next time around, when they faced a loose Connecticut Team being led by quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg.

Trailing throughout the game by one score, Maryland Team 1 finally scored, and took the lead after converting a two point try with two minutes left on the clock. Unfortunately, that was too much time for Mornhinweg, who quickly marched his team down the field for a last second score. Connecticut was defeated by Massachusetts in the semi-finals.

The other semi-final matched a speedy New Jersey Team 1 versus Maryland Team 2. New Jersey Team 1 was a heavy favorite to win the tournament because of roster which featured Savon Huggins, Miles Shuler, Bill Belton, and Damiere Byrd. The under-manned Maryland Team 2, whose best player is a sophomore, played smothering defense and defeated a New Jersey Team 1 that had been on fire.

The unlikely championship game matched Maryland Team 2 against Massachusetts. Maryland Team 2 went on to win the closely contested game by getting impressive performances from linebacker Elbie Williams, and receiver Cyrus Jones.

Maryland Team 2 won the 3rd Annual Badger Sports/New Level Athletics Northeast Regional 7 on 7 passing tournament. The win locks Maryland Team 2 in as the number 1 seed for the National Tournament that will be held 4th of July weekend.
