Decision Timeline Set for Bennett

Centerville (OH) OL/DL Michael Bennett has been among the fastest rising prospects in recent weeks. The offers are rolling in at a rapid pace and the talented youngster is beginning to sort through them. GoBlueWolverine caught up with him recently to discuss his game, his recruitment, his interest in Michigan, his decision timetable, and much much more.

Sam Webb:  I heard that Michigan is among those that have offered you a scholarship.  When did that come through?

Michael Bennett:  "It was maybe like three weeks or something like that… maybe two weeks."

Sam Webb:  Can you name all your scholarship offers right now?

Michael Bennett:  "I have 26 right now.   Oklahoma, Nebraska, Northwestern, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa… there are a lot of them."

Sam Webb:  Did you grow up a fan of any particular school?

Michael Bennett:  "Not really.  All my friends were Ohio State fans, but I wasn't partial to any certain school."

Sam Webb:  Have any of those offers impacted you in a more significant way than any of the others?

Michael Bennett:  "The Ohio State offer was my eighth offer I think and that was big because a lot of schools started offering after them.  I think that kind of started the whole thing, because I only had a couple of schools.  The biggest offer before Ohio State was Cincinnati and Duke and then Ohio State offered.  Before that I wasn't really known, but once they offered people started looking at me more."

Sam Webb:  Ohio State has picked up three or four commitments in the last few days.  Is that something that is going to affect you?

Michael Bennett:  "I think if my spot was in jeopardy they would tell me that. I've got two people I guess that might take my spot or whatever, and they haven't contacted me… so I'm not rushing anything.  Whatever place I'm going to commit to will know by the end of spring, because I'm going to make a lot of visits."

Sam Webb:  So you're going to take a lot of visits over the course of spring and then make a decision at the end of spring?

Michael Bennett:  "Right."

Sam Webb:  What places do you think you are going to visit?

Michael Bennett:  "I'm hoping to visit Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Northwestern, Cincinnati and maybe a couple of others."

Sam Webb:  When you go to these schools what are you going to be looking for?  What are the traits that are going to make a school more desirable to you?

Michael Bennett:  "When I go looking, I'm going to look for what the campus is like.  How I feel when I'm on the campus.  I've heard that some people just feel better on certain campuses.  I'm going to be thinking how the team treats me and how the coaches will treat me and stuff like that."

Sam Webb:  Is there a particular style of play that you are looking for or a particular scheme that you're looking for?

Michael Bennett:  "Not really."

Sam Webb:  What about some of the other factors.. academics, your major; are you going to be looking at that?

Michael Bennett:  "I'm going to be majoring in premed, so I want a good academic school that is strong in that."

Sam Webb:  Have you done any initial research on the schools to figure out which ones are higher up on the list academically?

Michael Bennett:  "I know at least in the premed field that Northwestern, Ohio State and Michigan are really strong with that, but that's wasn't just research that was just people telling me that, common knowledge. Oh and Duke, they're really strong in medicine."

Sam Webb:  Is distance from home going to be a factor for you?

Michael Bennett:  "I do not know.  I do not think so because I feel if I like a campus enough and the football team enough it won't really be a factor."

Sam Webb:  What do you know about Michigan at this point?  What kind of interaction have you had with them?

Michael Bennett:  "I do not know too much about Michigan.  I've talked to the coaches some and I think I'll be visiting them sometime in the spring, in April some time.  I do not know too much about them yet though."

Sam Webb:  Would you say Ohio State is the school you know the most about right now?

Michael Bennett:  "Yeah but that's just because I live in Ohio."

Sam Webb:  Would you say that the Buckeyes are your favorite at this point?

Michael Bennett:  "No.  I do not really have any favorites right now."

Sam Webb:  Talk about your game a little bit.  Your height, weight and your 40 time and who people might compare you to in college or the pros.

Michael Bennett:  "I'm 6'3" right now, 275 pounds, give or take like five depends on the day.  I run a 4.9 40.  I'm an aggressive player.  I get off the ball really well.  I'm just really aggressive on the field and I explode very well.  It catches a lot of people off guard."

Sam Webb:  I hear you play in the same league as Trey DePriest and Braxton Miller.  What do you think of Trey as a player?

Michael Bennett:  "He's a solid player.  He plays a lot of different positions.  He's not just a good running back or a good linebacker; he's great at multiple positions.  That's impressive."

Sam Webb:  What about the Wayne (Ohio) guys; I know Michigan picked up a couple of Huber Heights Wayne guys last year.  I don't know if you'll have any nice things to say about any Wayne guys… and I think that's you guys' rival right?

Michael Bennett:  "Yeah (laughter)."

Sam Webb:  but I know Michigan picked up a couple of those guys in the Talbott brothers; what did you think of them?

Michael Bennett:  "I thought they were pretty good.  I went up against them, at least one of them.  I do not really know who the other one did.  I went up against the defensive lineman Talbott and he was pretty good.  I think Braxton Miller is very good.  I have a lot of respect for him."

GoBlueWolverine will have more on Bennett in the coming weeks.
