GoBlueWolverine first heard of Pat Martin about two years ago when he was just a young pup on the scene.
"I have another player down here in South Carolina that you will be hearing
about real soon," said J.L. Mann's defensive coordinator Coach Lewis to us over a year ago, "and his name is Pat Martin. He is just a sophomore but he is going to be really good. Keep your eyes open for him."
Coach Lewis certainly knows about talent. He coached Michigan's current starting
cornerback J.T. Floyd and so helped in Floyd's high school development.
Now Pat Martin is a rising senior and trying to enjoy the
process of recruiting. He has received many offers from schools all over the
country, and he says he just wants to take his time.
"It is tough sometimes with all of the attention," he told GBW. "But I just try and stay
grounded and be humble."
Pat has ten-plus offers now -- Tennessee, UCLA, Wisconsin, LSU, and Oklahoma to name a
few. There is also another school that has caught his attention and knows them
"Michigan is showing me a lot of interest. Coach Gibson came to my school to
speak with Coach Lewis about me. I will be calling Coach Gibson so that we can
Martin is familiar with the Wolverines, because last summer he came to their
summer football camp. He came away impressed with the time he spent in Ann Arbor.
"I had a good time up at Michigan, The Big House is off the chain, and they have
good facilities too. I really like the defensive coordinator Greg Robinson. He
is real energetic. I like their coaches too -- they are real intense. I felt like
the way they were coaching me made me compete harder."
The J.L. Mann product also has plugged in to a former alum to help him with his
football both mentally and physically.
"J.T. Floyd has really helped me a lot. He is a very good motivator, always
telling me to keep working hard. J.T. said once you get to college 5-stars don't
matter -- everyone has a clean slate. He said you have to go out and make a name
for yourself. He has helped me with tips on my backpedal, and by telling me to get
in the weight room to get better."
The Michigan camp allowed him to get to know some players who were also at the camp that he
has continued to talk with.
"I had a chance to get to know Greg Brown (Michigan commit from Ohio) and
DeAnthony Arnett. I saw DeAnthony's tape on Facebook and he saw mine and we
just gave each other props about our tapes. We talk on Facebook just to catch up
and see what is going on."
Martin is interested in Michigan and they are interested in him ... it may be just a
matter of time before the two are connected.
