Top Jr. QB Prospect: Pa.'s Chad Henne

In our list of top junior quarterback prospects two weeks ago, we speculated whether West Lawn, Pa.'s Chad Henne might have an interest in Michigan. Last night (Thurs.) Chad let us know.

We put in a call Thurs. evening to Chad Henne (6-3, 220 lbs., 4.6 in the 40) from West Lawn, Pa., Wilson.

"Chad is at Penn State today," Mr. Henne said. "Call back at eight o'clock."

So at 8PM I made the call, and a stuffed-up Chad picked up the phone.

"Yeah, I've got a cold. I just got back from Penn State, from an unofficial visit. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive from West Lawn (a suburb of Redding, in East-Central Pa.). No, they weren't having spring practice or anything."

Is Michigan one of your top schools?

"Yes. Michigan, Penn State, Georgia, Miami are my top schools right now. There are a few others in mix ... I'm keeping things open."

Did Michigan visit your school before Signing Day?

"Yes. Coach Loeffler has been to the school."

Has Michigan offered you a scholarship?

"Yes. My coach says I have about 25 offers."

Have you ever been to U-M?

"Yeah, I was there last spring on a junior day."

What are your plans this spring /summer?

"I'm not going to any camps. I'll make a couple visits here and there -- Michigan will be one. In the summer I might go tour some Southern schools."

"I'm not going to a Nike Combine. I did agree to go to the Fab Seven quarterback combine in Pasadena in late May, but it's the week of the state track meet so I don't think I can go. I've been invited to the Elite 11 quarterback camp in July, but I'm still undecided about that."

How would you describe yourself as a quarterback?

"I can drop back, or I can run the ball. We run some quick three-step drops, and we also run the option. I run a 4.6 in the 40. Around here they compare me to Kerry Collins, since he graduated from my school. But we're not really the same kind of quarterback. Kerry is a pure drop back quarterback. I have good arm strength, but I can run as well."

As a junior Henne passed for 2080 yards (60% completion rate) and 23 touchdowns, with just three interceptions. He is one of the consensus top ten junior quarterbacks in the USA.
