Summer Camp

For Division 1 football prospects, the Summer before their Senior year is a busy time. While a small handful might commit prior to that point, the vast majority of players make the camp rounds to try to raise their profile on the recruiting scene. One particular safety prospect did just that this past weekend.

Marcelis Williams Profile

"It was pretty good. It was a new experience for me," Avon, Ind. native Marcelis Williams says of Middle Tennessee's camp this past Sunday. "I love the campus and facilities. I like the coaches. I like the motto of the program and I feel like Middle Tennessee would be a good fit for me."

Funny enough, Williams wasn't initially a target of the Blue Raider staff. He tagged along with his teammate Charles Davis, but ended up wowing the staff all the same.

"I had a pretty good day. I'm pretty sure they're about to start recruiting me," he says, adding that he ran a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash during camp. "Coach Coleman gave me his number and told me to stay in touch once a week. He told me that they're going to continue to look at me through my senior year."

Middle Tennessee isn't the only program taking notice of the 6-0, 185 lb. speedster. He's also hearing from Indiana State, Ball State, Bowling Green and Purdue.

A two-way player, Williams explains that his combination of size, speed and athleticism are his best assets on the defensive side of the ball. He doesn't go far enough to say that opposing receivers will sometimes underestimate him, but he does claim that his recovery speed is what makes him such a solid defender.

"I just got done with track, too. I think I got a little bit faster. I think I can run a 4.4 now," he laughs.

He'll definitely have the opportunity to try for a 4.4 this Summer. All in all, Williams will be attending over a dozen camps when it's all said and done. He's undoubtedly trying to earn himself a few offers before the Summer ends and is definitely hoping that his final year at Avon will earn him even more.

"I'm just going to be playing my heart out and giving it all my last year," he says. "I'll be getting good grades and finishing my high school career right. I'm looking forward to the future."
