Blue Raiders Face a Crucial Stretch Run

The Blue Raiders face a crucial stretch when they play host to Sun Belt leaders South Alabama and Western Kentucky.

Murfreesboro, TN- Starting this week the Blue Raiders face a crucial stretch run. They will host the two top teams in the Sun Belt; South Alabama on Thursday and Western Kentucky on Saturday. If not for a disappointing six point loss to FIU over the weekend the Blue Raiders might be looking to make a run into one of the top 2 spots.

The Blue Raiders are currently is 3rd place in the Sun Belt. The top three teams will get an opening round bye. Unfortunately for the Blue Raiders, the top three teams are all from the East division and the champion from the West division is guaranteed to be the number one or two seed. This means, short of a miracle, the best the Blue Raiders can hope for is 4th place and playing host in the opening round.

Barring a total collapse the Blue Raiders should finish no worse than 6th place. Since seeds four through seven play host in the opening round, one might wonder why this week is so important to Davis' team. It is all about confidence.

The Blue Raiders have been on a roll the last 10 games, but the loss to FIU was unexpected. With the two leading Sun Belt teams traveling to Murfreesboro this week it is possible that the Blue Raiders could go on a three game losing streak. This would not be the type of streak any team wants just a couple of weeks before the start of the conference tournament. However, beating one or both of the conference leaders could just be the boost Middle Tennessee needs in order to make it deep in the conference tournament.

Bottom line is that two losses could be very devastating. If the Blue Raiders manage a split, it would be acceptable. If they are able to sweep the games this week then they would be serving notice to the rest of the conference that this team is ready to make a post season run.
