A Formal Introduction
When the Ohio Bobcats take the field against the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee on Friday, it will mark the first matchup between the two programs. The Bobcats went 29-24 in 2009.
Sizing up the Bobcats
Ohio spent last weekend participating in the 2010 Elon Classic where they went 1-2 and gave up a total of 18 runs as a team. They did manage to score a total of 19 runs during that three game stretch, but 13 of those runs came if their final game of the tournament, with the Bobcats only posting scores of two and four for the Friday and Saturday games, respectively.
Ohio had several noteworthy offensive performances during the course of the first weekend. Leadoff man Bryan Barnes went 3-for-5 with a home run in Saturday's loss to Elon. Additinoally, first baseman Jerod Yakubik, right fielder Robert Maddox and catcher Kris McDonough all notched three hits during Sunday's blowout victory over Towson. Maddox ended up with 4 rbi's and a run scored in the game as well.
All-Americans square off
Blue Raider fans are in for a treat this weekend as they get to see two pre-season All-Americans duke it out at Reese Smith, Jr. Field. In addition to Middle's own Bryce Brentz (who was a unanimous selection for the First Team All-American squad), Ohio's Guantlett Eldemire was a Third-Team selection thanks to his 2009 numbers. Last season, Eldemire posted a .313 average with 21 home runs and 56 rbi's to go along with it. While mostly silent at the plate during the Bobcats' first two games of 2010, Eldemire went 2-for-4 with four runs scored in Sunday's finale.
Something to Note
Among the Ohio program's notable alumni is Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt, who spent four seasons at Ohio beginning in 1968.
