Road Trippin'

Palm Bay quarterback Steven Hughes hit the road with his father this Summer to try and raise his profile on the national recruiting scene. He already had a solid 2009 season on his resume and his performance at camps around the South is starting to see his stock rise. In fact, he has a feeling that a few more offers could be on their way soon.

Steven Hughes Profile

"I was talking to Blake Anderson from Southern Miss and I think there's going to be an offer coming from them pretty soon," says Hughes. "Middle Tennessee also sounded like they were going to pull the plug pretty soon, too."

If those offers pan out over the next few weeks, that would put the strong-armed quarterback up to four so far. He currently holds offers from Louisiana-Lafayette and New Mexico and has recently attended camps at Florida Atlantic, South Florida and UCF.

"USF is my favorite, because it's a perfect system and it's close to home, but pretty much everybody is on the same level," he says. " There's not one school ahead of another."

Although USF may lead the pack of potential suitors, Hughes maintains that he's looking for one thing out of schools: the ability to throw the ball.

"In high school we do a little bit of everything. It depends on the team that we're playing, but we mostly do 2 WR, 1 TE packs and we do a lot of 3 receiver packages," he says. "In college, it doesn't matter to me as long as we're throwing the ball. It looks like most teams do the spread so that fits."

It makes sense that Hughes wants to air it out after his strong junior season. He accounted for 1,454 passing yards and 18 touchdowns through the air in 2009, and he's undoubtedly looking to do more of the same in 2010. While he originally planned to sign early, Hughes says that he's now looking to make a signing-day decision in hopes of wowing some schools during the season.

"Me and my dad had originally planned on me signing early so I could go into Spring football, but when I talked to my mom about it she wanted me to wait so I could receive more opportunities."

Extra Extra:

On potential majors: "I was thinking about going into business management, but at Southern Miss they offered a couple different classes in high performance athletic technology and they also had sports management and they really caught my eye. I'm going to start looking into sports management or medicine."

On Middle Tennessee: "I like how the coaches made me feel comfortable. We sat down and had a long talk with the OC and we got along pretty good. I just like the feel and the environment and the facilities."
