Interview: D.J. Burris

"Even starting back in spring ball, when we came out I just feel like this offensive line group just really bonded together..."

Center D.J. Burris discusses...

Jon Hoese's performance in the wake of his fathers stroke…

"He did an awesome job. I mean every time we got close or every time we were in short yardage we knew we were giving it to him. We knew we were going to get the first down. It's just something that we knew we were going to get and he did an awesome job."

Jon Hoese being an inspiration…

"He's been a big inspiration I mean. You can only just guess what that would fell like to be in his shoes. We wanted to play the best that we could to give him that game ball and we knew it would mean so much for him and his family."

Reaching out to Hoese…

"I haven't really talked to him that much this week. I think he's been with his family and that's kind of where he needs to be and then maybe he will work his way back in. Whenever we he comes back we're going to accept him and he just needs to take care of his family business right now."

The locker room atmosphere after Thursday's game…

"Oh it was definitely…it was awesome. Everybody was cheering, I mean we've been hitting each other for so many weeks and it's finally nice to get to hit the other team and actually get a victory. Then giving the game ball to Hoese was something that I will never forget."

Playing South Dakota in the home opener…

"This is big, like you said it's our home opener and we want to get our first home victory. They've got a lot of good players. They run a different defense than we've seen before, so it's something we'll have to watch a lot of film on and kind of get used to what they are doing and be prepared for it."

What South Dakota does well as a team…

"As an offensive line standpoint I feel like their d-line really gets up the field and kind of hits the o-line. I mean their first move is kind of hit the o-linemen and then go from there. I feel like that's where we have to do good steps off the ball and kind of get into them pretty quick."

The run-first game plan against MTSU…

"Definitely love to get back to running the ball like that. I think that's going to be our same goal this week. We want to establish the run and build stuff off of the run. It opens up a lot of different stuff when you can run the ball like that."

The continuity of the offensive linemen…

"Even starting back in spring ball, when we came out I just feel like this offensive line group just really bonded together."

"We could tell that there were times when we would look at each other in the huddle and be like lets get this play working. We were always playing; we were playing for each other, the people that were in that huddle. You can really take more of an ownership when stuff like that starts happening."
