Three players have really started to step their game up on the Gopher defense. Last game against Illinois…

-Anthony Jacobs eight total tackles were a career best. He also collected his second sack of the season.

-Jewhan Edwards' 3-yard sack on the final play of the first quarter was his second of the season and his team-leading ninth tackle for loss. Edwards now has two of the Gophers' six sacks this season.

-Gary Tinsely had a team-high 12 tackles, his second best total of the season and the fifth time this year he hit double figures in stops.

The bye week came at a good time for Minnesota. It will allow time to get players healthy for its final game against Iowa. Here are some players who missed time against Illinois that could play against Iowa if they continue to get healthy.

-LB Mike Rallis missed the game against Illinois because of an undisclosed injury. He's battled an abdominal injury for most of the season but a week off should get him ready for Iowa.

-OL Matt Carufel missed last game with a knee injury. It was originally thought he may have torn his ACL but the injury proved to be far less serious. Last week coach Jeff Horton said he expects Caufel back for the game against Iowa but more will be known next week.

-OL Ed Olson missed last game because of an injury. He was replaced by Dom Alford who played well. If Olson can't make it back for next game, the Gophers should feel comfortable in Alford replacing Olson.

Quote to note…

"It makes all those losses go away. It feels so good to win, it gives us a jump start into the next game and also next season." -- Defensive end Anthony Jacobs, on the win over Illinois.
