Prep Career

Philip Nelson had a dominant junior season, throwing for 2,300 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also ran for over 600 yards and added 13 scores on the ground. Nelson led Mankato West to a State Tournament berth before falling to Mahtomedi in the quarterfinals.

Nelson received his first—and currently only offer—from the University of Minnesota a few weeks ago. Despite having only one offer, Nelson has been hearing from a lot of schools including Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa state, Wisconsin, Michigan St., Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Florida.

When asked if he had an early college favorite Nelson said, "Well not any one favorite, but I've kept in better touch with Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State and Nebraska than Florida and Vanderbilt."

He went on to say, "I talk to those coaches quite a bit, and Florida and Vanderbilt just kind of asked for film, invited me to a junior day/camp."

Nelson attended Minnesota's Junior Day this past weekend where he met the newest Gopher commit Andre McDonald.

"Well this past weekend I went up to kind of a private meeting with the coaches, only three players were there, and me and Andre got to know each other," Nelson said.

While at Minnesota, Nelson met with the coaching staff.

"I met all of them, but I mainly spent my day with [Pat] Poore, [Jim] Zebrowski, and [Jerry] Kill. Coach Kill is a very down to earth and ‘tell it like it is' type of guy."

Nelson has junior days invites from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan State. He will surely acquire more scholarship offers as his recruitment heats up.
