Welch Picks Gophers

Earlier today, Julian Welch committed to the Gophers, filling a void at point guard. Welch is the third commit for Minnesota's 2011 class.

Welch is 6-foot-3 point guard with a great scoring touch as well as the ability to distribute the ball. He projects as a candidate for the starting point guard job next season due to already having experience playing at the college level.

Welch is a junior college transfer from Yuba College after transferring from UC Davis. At UC Davis he redshirted one season and went on to have a stellar freshman campaign that saw him win Big West Freshman of the Year honors. Welch led Yuba College to a conference title this season with an 11-0 conference record.

Earlier this month, Julian Welch visited Minnesota and walked away impressed. Welch said he enjoyed hanging out with the team and coaches, as well as going to the Gophers' game against Penn State.

Welch was also pleased to see the possibility of helping out the Gophers next season. He said he liked, "Seeing how I can contribute my talents to the team next year if I decide to bring my talents to Minnesota." Welch can now be sure where his can utilize his talents as he committed to the University of Minnesota on Saturday.
