Gophers Officially Offer Smith

Earlier today, the Gophers confirmed their interest in David Smith of Bremen High School, officially offering the running back. talked with Smith about his newest official offer.

Prior to his departure for the University of Wisconsin, former running back coach Thomas Hammock was on the recruiting trail of Midlothian (Ill.) running back David Smith. "Coach Hammock was the one who recruited me then left to Wisconsin," he said.

On Tuesday, Smith got word that the Gophers were officially offering him a scholarship offer.

"Minnesota called my head coach and informed him that they wanted to offer me a scholarship," he said about his newest offer.

Smith is already planning a trip to Minnesota in the near future. "I will be visiting next week or the week after," he said.

Smith—who has offers from Central Michigan, Illinois, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, West Virginia, and Western Michigan—finished his junior season totaling 928 yards rushing and eight touchdowns on 111 carries. He was also a receiving threat—hauling in three touchdown receptions.

What can the Illinois speedster bring to a college team? "A hard worker, leadership, versatility and just that team energy," the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder said.

With three offers from within the state of Illinois, one could assume that Smith will want to stay close to home.

"I'm just looking for somewhere that can relate to home and that I'll feel comfortable for four years, doesn't matter the distance to me really," he said.
