Jazzmar Clax Reflects on Gopher Offer

The Minnesota Golden Gophers coaching staff has been making the most of the spring evaluation period by making trips around the country and handing out offers. Freehold Borough (N.J.) linebacker Jazzmar Clax is one of those recent offerees and GoldenSports.net was able to talk with him about his recent offer.

The recruitment for Clax has picked up in the last two weeks when he received an offer from both the Minnesota Gophers and Arizona State Sun Devils. Minnesota coach Jeff Phelps has kept in contact with Clax throughout the process visiting him last week as well as visiting him today.

"They've been in to visit me and watched film with my coach," Clax said. "I've actually talked to him a few times and he's actually in to visit me today and they offered me last week. They love the way I play on film and my intensity, the way I get to the ball on the defensive side. They saw me being a great player on film and thought I'd be a great fit for their system."

Clax knows quite a bit about the Minnesota program since former Golden Gopher and NFL player Darrell Reid is also an alumnus of Freedhold Borough.

"I know Minnesota players who say it's a big time program, a guy a couple years back graduated from my high school named Darrell Reid who played at the University of Minnesota and now plays in the NFL," he said. "I've been in contact with him talking about Minnesota."

Does Clax plan on making a trip to Minnesota sometime soon?

"I probably won't come to camp but I plan on making a trip out there to be around the people in the Twin Cities," he said. "To get the experience of the lifestyle of the guys who are with the Gophers and also to see things and get a feel of things for myself."

Clax knows some of the factors he will be looking for when he eventually take some school visits.

"I'm looking for a big time program as far as football and big time academics," he said. "As far as Minnesota they have a big time business school where you can do summer internships at fortune 500 companies out there so that's definitely a positive look."

Does he have a timeline set for his commitment?

"I'm probably going to hold off and see what happens, this is a long process and it really has just begun," he said. "I'm just trying to enjoy myself and to see what things lead for in my future and what's the best fit for me and my family."
