Gophers Leading For Florida Defensive Tackle

The Minnesota Golden Gophers recruitment has picked up recently in the sunshine state recently. GoldenSports.Net was able to talk with Hollywood Hills (Fla.) defensive lineman Jean-Marc Charles about his offer from the Gophers.

"The first day I saw him [Coach Bill Miller] he pulled me out of class and talked with me," Charles said. "He was just being an open guy we walked around and talked and I walked him to his car then he came back that night and watched practice the same day. About two weeks later he came back and watched our spring game and he offered me after that."

Like his teammate Terry Harden, Charles says that he tries to talk with Coach Miller at least once a week.

In addition to Minnesota; Western Michigan, Memphis, New Mexico, Bethune-Cookman, Marshall and Bowling Green have all extended offers. Miami (Fla.) has also been in contact with the highly coveted defensive lineman.

Over the summer Charles plans on taking unofficial visits to schools that have been talking to him. He isn't sure which colleges he will visit but he knows what he will be looking for in a school.

"I'm looking for a close environment like with the teachers helping in class, hopefully the school will have a sports medicine or bio-engineering major and small classes of 20 students or less."

Over the summer the 6-foot-2, 250-pounder plans on increasing his speed by running on the beach with weight jackets and doing deep squats.

As of right now Charles said his top five schools would be: Minnesota, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Marshall and Memphis. He noted Minnesota was at the top of his list and would likely get a visit.

Charles, who Minnesota is recruiting as a defensive tackle, plans on making a decision between the middle and end of his season.
