Minnesota Defensive Back Talks Recruiting

Minnetonka (Minn.) defensive back, Charles Webb, is part of a highly-talented 2012 class in Minnesota. The 5-foot-10, 181-pound athlete took the time to talk with GoldenSports.net about his recent visit to the Gophers as well as the latest on his recruitment.

Webb, who mainly plays safety for the Minnetonka Skippers, feels he will be able to play any position in the secondary at the next level.

"A lot of people ask me where I want to play or what I think I'll play," he said. "I tell them that my size is probably a corner at the D-1 level but a lot of them (coaches) tell me I can play safety. At Iowa they had Bob Sanders and they said I could play safety. I think I'll be able to play safety but if not, for sure corner."

This versatility has landed Webb interest from a number of schools in the Midwest.

"I'm talking to Iowa a lot," he said. "I just started talking to Iowa State, UNI (Northern Iowa), and I talked to NIU (Northern Illinois)."

While currently holding one offer, Webb feels that there could be more coming his way.

"I just got the one from Toledo and then I got two schools that want to see my ACT score after I take it," he said. "I think in October I'm taking it. They just want to see, but Iowa says they have one for me and UNI says they have one for me."

Another school Webb is interested in is Minnesota, where he attended a camp this past June.

"I went to their camp but I still haven't gotten a hold of them," he said. "I called a couple times but I haven't left any messages."

Webb was a standout at camp, playing very physical and showing solid coverage ability.

"On 1-on-1's I felt like I covered really well," he said. "In drills I just listened. I feel like I did those really well. I thought overall I had a really good camp. I thought I was going to get an offer for sure but I have to keep calling and trying to get in touch and see where I stand."

Along with the camp at Minnesota, Webb is looking to check out two other Big Ten schools this offseason.

"I really want to go see Nebraska and Michigan State," he said. "I talked to Coach [Brad] Salem during the school year and he wanted me to come down so I'm going to try and get down there and to Nebraska. Those are the two I want to see."

When on visits, Webb knows what he is looking for in a school and football team.

"School-wise it's just what I want to do, I guess would be like business school because I kind of want to do business while I'm in college," he said.

"I'm just looking at their programs and how their coaches are with their players. Some like to show their school (during recruiting) but they don't really talk to the players after that. I just want to see what coaches are really into their players and not in it just to get somebody down there," said Webb when asked what he is trying to find in a team.

What can Webb bring to the team he eventually commits to?

"Toughness," he said. "I'm small and everything and a lot of people underestimate me sometimes but I can hit with any of the biggest guys."
