Allen is drawn to Minnesota because of his relationship with coach Jay Sawvel and the opportunity of early playing time.
"I've built up a real good relationship with Coach Sawvel right now we've been talking about setting up an official visit," he said. "The biggest factor for me right now is being able to step in and get early playing time as a freshman and that's something that all of the schools have been selling me."
Allen has also been learning more about the University of Minnesota and the football program. Most notably, he's taken notice of the returning players and the system the Gophers will be employing.
"I know that they are returning a great quarterback that's coming back this season," Allen said. "I also know they run a little bit of a spread offense and they really try and get the receivers the ball."
Allen says his current leader is Iowa State and that he plans on making a decision soon after he finishes his third preseason game. He also stated that he'd most likely take official visits after he has made his decision.
Over the off-season, the 6-foot-2, 188-pounder has been working on his agility, getting in and out of his breaks and improving his hand strength. Allen hopes these improvements will help him achieve both personal and team goals.
"My team goal is to make it past the third round of the playoffs and my personal goal is to have at least 1200 yards receiving and at least 20 touchdowns this season," Allen said.
During his sophomore season Allen had 23 receptions for 350 yards and four touchdowns. In his junior season he had 51 receptions 678 yards and six touchdowns. Elkins finished 8-3 last season. Allen also plays guard for the Knights basketball team.
