Gophers In Top Two for Cheeks

As we enter mid-August, high school teams around the country are starting to gear up for their upcoming season. O. Perry Walker (La.) is one of those teams preparing for their upcoming season. One player they will be relying on is Marques Cheeks.

"We start our first practice in pads on Monday and our first game is either at the end of August or the right at the beginning of September," Cheeks said.

With the season fast-approaching Cheeks has set some lofty personal and team goals.

"My personal goal is to be ranked at least in the top 50 on both sides of the ball as a guard and as a defensive end," he said. "And our team goal is to win the state championship."

Cheeks currently holds offers from Minnesota, Mississippi State, Florida International, Kansas State and the University of Louisiana Monroe. Over the summer he attended camps at Mississippi State and LSU and also made a visit to FIU over the summer.

Cheeks was invited to camp at Minnesota but was unable to make the trip. Despite not being able to make it up to Minnesota this summer Cheeks says Minnesota is still one of his favorites.

"Minnesota and Mississippi State are my top teams right now," Cheeks said. "I'm still pretty open though to all of the schools that have been recruiting me."

So what is it about Minnesota that has the Gophers at the top of his list?

"They seem to have a really nice program that's on the rise right now," he said. "I believe that they could turn me into a great player at the next level."

Cheeks currently plans on taking official visits during the season to Minnesota, FIU and Mississippi State. He plans on waiting until after his season to make his decision.
