Nelson Takes In Gopher Scrimmage

One of the Gophers' top commits for 2012, Philip Nelson, was on hand for Saturday's scrimmage at TCF Bank Stadium. As Nelson looked on, the Maroon and Gold ran over 120 plays in front of 1000 fans.

The 6-foot-3, Mankato West product has been a fixture at Gopher events throughout the spring and summer. He attended multiple spring practices and took part in Jerry Kill's Friday night camp under the lights. Nelson's latest trip to the Twin Cities came when he took in Saturday's scrimmage.

"It was pretty interesting," he said of the scrimmage. "They definitely have some ups and downs, but the best part was the intensity level. At least that's always there with Coach Kill out there."

Nelson has had plenty of opportunities to visit the Gophers during practice and what he saw in the offense on Saturday was not a surprise to him.

"You could tell the offense wasn't showing much, and even when I talked to Coach Zebrowski after the game, he admitted they kept it pretty vanilla," he said.

One of the highlights of scrimmage was the 1000-plus people in attendance.

"Yeah," said Nelson when asked if he was impressed with the turnout. "Especially since the staff told me they didn't really promote it, so they weren't really expecting that many people at all, which is a good thing that the fans are excited about this new team."
