Washington named second team Best of the West

6-3 guard Wesley Washington of Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei was named second team Best of the West by the Long Beach Press Telegram. Washington received 91 votes, tied for the most of any second team selections. He finished just two votes short of making the 15-member first team. The Best of the West team included high school seniors from California, Arizona, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico. Fellow signee 6-7 Kerry Woolridge of San Leandro got five votes.

The Gopher signee found out Tuesday that he will be eligible to play basketball as a freshman after receiving word that has gotten a qualifying standardized test score. Washington led Mater Dei to a 35-2 mark and finished the year ranked #3 by College Basketball News. The Monarchs defeated Roseville Woodcreek 70-49 to win the California Division II state title as Washington had 12 points. Washington averaging 15.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.0 steals per game on a balanced team that has seven Division I caliber recruits. He was named the California Division II State Player of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports and Orange County Player Of The Year by the Orange County Register
