Recruiting Notes: Interest from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa State.
Jones is an outstanding young running back prospect who has a great combination of size, speed, and toughness. He shows great patience waiting for the hole to open and then accelerates through with an incredible burst of speed. Jones has good vision and makes defenders miss almost every way possible—sidestepping, changing direction, spinning, or simply putting his shoulder down and running through tackles.
He always keeps his feet moving even after contact and finishes his runs strong, gaining those tough extra yards, especially in third-and-short or fourth-and-short situations where it is critical to convert the first down. Jones also shows the ability to turn the corner well on stretch plays and once he gets into the open field he is almost unstoppable—using his speed to outrun every defender like he did twice in this game for a pair of touchdowns.
The one area that Jones will need to improve on if he is going to be an all-around back at the next level is his ability to catch and hold onto the ball. In this game, he dropped a ball that was directly snapped to him on a fake punt, dropped another that was tossed to him on a sweep, and fumbled the ball one time while trying to gain extra yards at the end of a run. He has to develop better ball security skills and should devote some extra practice time to catching the football, but he is only a sophomore so he has plenty of time to get better and his potential is outstanding.
