Johnson Set for Gopher Official

With the Gophers' staff flying across the country making recruiting visits, there are bound to be a number of visitors to Minnesota. One such play is Shaker Heights (Ohio) safety Antonio Johnson. Although committed to Ball State, Johnson will take his official visit to the Twin Cities this weekend.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Ohio safety recently committed to Ball State but is still looking at other schools.

"I'm still committed to Ball State unless I find somewhere that's absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, that I think is better, then I'm going to be committed to Ball State."

Johnson picked Ball State due to their tireless recruiting.

"No other school really showed that they liked me as much as Ball State," he said. "No other school really felt it was like a family."

Despite his commitment, Johnson has been in contact with the Minnesota coaching staff for months.

"I've actually been in contact with coach Jeff Phelps since the middle of my season," he said. ‘It wasn't until maybe last week that we talked about going up there for an official visit."

So far, Johnson likes what he see in the Gophers.

"They're going to graduate some safeties so there is a chance for me to get on the field early," he said.

Johnson can also see himself playing in the Big Ten.

"I think I could fit in because the Big Ten is known for running the ball and I'm a safety that can help stop the run."

This interest in Minnesota, as well as the Big Ten, has led to Johnson taking an official visit to the Twin Cities this weekend.

"I'm just going to be looking for, overall, how I feel when I'm on campus," he said. "If I get a vibe and it feels like family."

With a large amount of interest in Minnesota, does Johnson hold a Gopher offer?

"No, but I should be getting one while I'm on campus."
