Steen Looking to Visit Gophers

A new prospect that has gained interest from the Gophers is Beckman (Calif.) defender Elijah Steen. Minnesota has been in contact for only a short time but may invite Steen to the Twin Cities for a visit in the near future.

Steen is a new name to Gopher fans but he might become more familiar late in the cycle. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound safety has plenty of interest, including from Minnesota.

"I have an offer from UC Davis," he said. "I have interest from Nevada, Stanford, BYU, Cal Berkley, Minnesota, Air Force, North Carolina, and Iowa."

Steen's favorite school is in his home state of California.

"UCLA remains my number one because of their film program but at this point I am open to all Division 1 schools," he said.

There are more schools that are looking at Steen as a preferred walk-on.

"There are several schools who want me to come in as a preferred walk on because they do not have scholarships too but those are the main ones," Steen added.

One of the most recent schools to contact Steen is Minnesota.

"They called my head coach last week saying they have a scholarship at outside linebacker," he said.

After talking with Steen's coach, he was able to talk to the Minnesota coaching staff himself. The Gopher staff is looking at Steen as a possibility at outside linebacker.

"They want me to come out right after my SAT," he said. "(Daryl Agpalsa) wants me to take a visit before they make any decisions or offers."

The interest in Steen can be attributed to his stellar senior season. He recorded 84 tackle, 40 solo tackles, three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, five pass deflections and two forced fumbles. He also added 23 receptions for 384 yards and four touchdowns on offense.

Steen, who just turned 17 years old, describes himself as a player who could fit well in Maroon and Gold.

"I play very hard-nosed," he said. "My motor never stops. I play very smart, patient, but I come with a strike. I am a sure tackler, and can bring the wood. Hitting is my favorite thing about football."
