Gophers hoops open season versus UMKC

The Minnesota Gophers basketball team will open the 2003-04 season versus UMKC at home on Nov. 17 in the first round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament. The Kangaroos finished 9-20 overall and 7-7 in Mid-Continent conference play. They return five of their top six scorers, including Michael Watson, who finished fourth in country in scoring (25.5 point per game).

The winner will face the winner of the Georgia State-Utah contest. Georgia State was 14-15 last season and Mountain West co-champion Utah finished 25-8. The Utes welcome back leading scorer Nick Jacobson, who played basketball at Roseville (MN) High.


Connecticut, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech and Massachusetts are among the top teams that hope to advance to Madison Square Garden on November 26 and 28.


The Gophers faced Texas Tech on the road, losing 99-89 and defeating Georgia Tech 64-63 at home this past season.
