Schindler Looking for Gopher Offer

Hutchinson (Minn.) linebacker Shaun Schindler will get to know the Gopher program that he cheered for growing up even better this weekend as he will be attending the Gophers' Junior Day. Schindler spoke with about his upcoming visit.

Schindler, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound athlete out of Hutchinson (Minn.) will be one of the many Minnesota natives to take in the Gophers' junior day this weekend.

"I'm excited just to check out all the different facilities," said Schindler. "I want to see the weight room and just see what the coaches have to say like their philosophy and things like that."

Besides the Gophers, Schindler has also visited South Dakota State and will be attending the Iowa State Junior Day the weekend after the Gopher visit. There are aspects of each school that Schindler finds attractive.

"I like how Iowa State plays football," he said. "They've got good strength and conditioning and I went to a game down there last year and I just liked the stadium and the atmosphere and all that.

"I liked how South Dakota State runs things. The coach said how they're team is like a family. He talked about how they get together and they don't do hazing or anything like that. They bond together as a team."

With one visit complete and two more on the way what will he be looking for on his visits?

"It'd be nice if they all had that family atmosphere," he said. "That's pretty important. The most important thing for me will be how the coaches are and how they run things. Another big factor would definitely be facilities. I'll definitely be looking for that. The off-season is when you increase as a player. Practice will help you get ready for game time but the off-season increases you as an individual."

All three schools that Schindler is interested in are recruiting him as a middle linebacker. The main thing that he believes he'll bring to whichever school he ends up with is leadership.

"Leadership," he said when asked what he can add to a college program. "More by example than being vocal but I can get vocal sometimes. I also believe I have a high football IQ."

Being from Hutchinson, Schindler has grown up as a Gopher fan. Hutchinson has produced some noteworthy Gophers in Schindler's lifetime including Cory Sauter and Lindsey Whalen but the Gopher who made the biggest impact was the quarterback that he was a water boy for, Tony Mortenson.

"I grew up watching a lot of the (Gopher) games because Tony Mortenson, quarterback from Hutch, played there and I was a water boy for him. I just watched a lot of Gophers growing up and I've always thought it would be sweet playing there. If I were to get a Gopher offer I would commit right on the spot."
