Keelon Brookins Commits to Minnesota

Minnesota added its first commitment for the 2013 class on Sunday with St. Paul (Minn.) Tartan defensive back Keelon Brookins gave his pledge to become a Golden Gopher.

"I did commit to the University of Minnesota," Brookins told GoldenSports.net.

Brookins father is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, which played an important role in his early decision.

"The education program allowed me to commit early," he explained. "I want to major in education and they have a fantastic education program. My father received his master's and his doctor's degree in education from the U so I feel that I will succeed in that area."

Brookins plays a number of positions in high school but there is one side of the ball he prefers over the other.

"I play running back, receiver, safety and corner back in high school," he said. "The [Gopher coaches] are recruiting me as is athlete. I would prefer to play defensive back in college."

Wherever Brookins lines up for the Gophers, he plans on making plays.

"The type of player that I would describe myself as is a play-maker, a game-changer," he said. "I also bring leadership ability."

The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder was hearing from some of the top schools in the nation before he decided to make his decision.

"Some of the schools I was hearing from were Iowa State, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and Michigan State," he said. "I didn't have any other scholarship offers. They were just talking—a lot."

With numerous schools showing interest, could other offers sway Brookins' mind?

"If any other school were to offer that would not change my commitment," he said.
