Quotables

"We talked to Durand to let him know what the circumstances were. He handled it with great class." – Miami coach Jim Larranaga on the six-game suspension of leading scorer Durand Scott

"We both didn't want to end our season tonight. They came out and played real hard. Every time we made a run they came right back at us. We were mentally tough and pulled it out." – Miami guard Shane Larkin following Miami's opening round victory against Valparaiso

PREGAME NOTES

Regular Season Review: The Hurricanes were without key players throughout the season, going 5-4 while waiting on center Reggie Johnson to return from a foot injury and missing senior F DeQuan Jones for 10 games. Guard Garrius Adams missed time with a knee injury, and Johnson and Durand Scott both had to sit out games because of eligibility issues. The 'Canes still managed to go 9-7 in the ACC, their best conference record since joining the league in the 2004-05 season.

Scouting Report: Miami isn't the same team with junior guard Durand Scott out of the lineup. He was declared ineligible for the quarterfinal game of the ACC tourney when it was discovered he had received impermissible benefits under NCAA rules. He adds a toughness and ball handling to a team that can go big with 6-foot-10 Reggie Johnson and 6-foot-11 Kenny Kadji or small with 6-foot-5 Trey McKinney-Jones and 6-foot-6 Rion Brown adding quickness.

NIT First-Round Game: Rion Brown scored 18 points to lead Miami to a 66-50 win over Valparaiso on Wednesday night in the opening round of the NIT. The Hurricanes stretched a four-point lead and finished the game with a 16-0 run over the final 3:41.

Coaching Preview: Head coach Jim Larranaga is in his 28th season as a head coach and first at Miami. He has a 490-346 overall record and holds a 463-320 record in D-I games.

Last Meeting: Miami defeated Minnesota in the only other matchup against the two schools, a 63-58 victory during the 2009 Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
