Jeffery Jones Nearing Decision?

Minneapolis (Minn.) Washburn running back Jeffery Jones is just a sophomore but he has picked up interest from schools around the country including an offer from Minnesota back in January. GoldenSports.net was able to catch up with the talented running back and get the latest on his recruitment.

"Minnesota has contacted me a lot, Michigan State, Boise State, Iowa State, Wisconsin and Oregon have all been talking to me." Jones said.

Currently Jones holds just one offer and it happens to be from his hometown Gophers who happen to be his current favorite.

"I like Minnesota a lot, I mean it's my hometown team and I'd really like to see them get better," he said.

Jones was able to attend a few of the Gophers spring practices while on spring break and saw improvements in the team from previous years.

"I made it to a few spring practices over my spring break" Jones said. "It's kind of different from the way they used to run things, they get things going right away and the players look way different from last year so I expect a lot of them this year."

Since NCAA rules limit a schools contact with sophomores, Jones hasn't been able to learn too much about the other schools that are recruiting him.

"I don't really know too much about the other schools because they really haven't been in contact with me, because I'm just a sophomore," Jones said. "So I don't know much about their staff or team but I know they're good programs."

Coming off a season in which he rushed for over 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns, Jones knows there are still a lot of things he must work on in the off-season to get even better for his third season as starting tailback this coming fall.

"I think I'm a really solid player at running back and I can get better on defense," Jones said. "As a running back I think I just need to work on getting my pad level lower, holding onto the ball, and reading my blocks other than that I'm a really solid player. I also need to get faster and work my defensive back skills."

Over the summer, Jones plans to visit Minnesota, Iowa State and Oregon for football camps as long as they don't interfere with his AAU basketball schedule.

"I plan on going to Iowa State, Minnesota and I'm trying to raise some money to make it out to Oregon," Jones said. "Those are the main three that I want to get out to this summer that really don't get in the way of my AAU season."

Despite being only a sophomore Jones could be leaning towards a commitment in the near future.

"I think I'll commit soon, but I wouldn't say too soon but somewhere in between this football season if I'm not getting too much interest from other schools," he said.
