Gophers could steal another Ohioan

This past February, it was Ohio's Justin Valentine that signed with Minnesota, and in 2004 it could be another top running back from the Buckeye State that inks with the Golden Gophers.

Pernell Williams, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound running back from Dayton (Ohio) Jefferson is one of the top running back prospects in the Midwest.

Williams, who transferred to Jefferson High School from (Dayton) Chaminade-Julienne in mid-season says his stock dropped after his transfer.

"I was in the "Top Five" in Ohio's Future Stars before I transferred, now I think I'm in the 20's." Williams said.

"I'm the best running back in Ohio. You have to have that type of confidence. I know about (Brock) Bolen and I know about (Antonio) Pittman and the others, but I'm the best."

Does Williams have any offers?

"Right now, it's just Michigan State and Cincinnati. I think I'd have more if I didn't transfer from C.J. (Chaminade-Julienne).

"My favorites are Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State, Minnesota and Illinois. Basically the Big Ten schools.

"No leader right now. I'm looking forward to the upcoming season."

Williams started as a freshman for Chaminade-Julienne and had 900 yards rushing in eight games last year before transferring.

Pernell Williams is solid in the classroom, carrying a 3.3 GPA and scoring 21 on his ACT.
