According to reports in the Star Tribune, Gophers wide receiver Paris Hamilton had knee surgery earlier this week.
Hamilton, a junior wide receiver who transferred from Tyler (Texas) J.C., apparently injured his knee while running and went under the knife on Tuesday. The team has not reported how serious the injury is or how long he'll be sidelined. Practice starts Aug. 5 in preparation for the Aug. 30 season opener against Tulsa.
Hamilton is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound receiver who was rated the No. 1 juco WR in the country after he hauled in 24 passes for 576 yards and seven TDs last year at Tyler. He's been widely expected to step into the starting lineup this fall, filling the spot vacated by Antoine Burns.

And, as reported here last week, the Gophers were cheering for the National League in Tuesday night's Major League Baseball All-Star Game. A win by the NL would guarantee that Game 1 of the World Series would be held in the NL champ's home park on Oct. 18.
Instead, the American League rallied for a 7-6 win, which puts the Gophers' Oct. 18 Homecoming game with Michigan State in jeopardy. The Gophers, of course, share the Metrodome with the Minnesota Twins, and despite the Twins' recent struggles, they still could pull themselves back into the race for the AL Central Division title.
When the Twins won the AL Central last year, their postseason commitments at the Metrodome knocked two Gopher games -- against Illinois and Northwestern -- back to Thursday nights. This year, the Oct. 11 game against Michigan as well as the MSU tilt a week later represent potential conflicts should the Twins once again reach baseball's postseason.
Minnesota AD Joel Maturi must notify the Big Ten by Sept. 1 if the date or venue of either game will be changed. Both opponents have refused to play mid-week games, citing last year's small crowds and short prep time for the Illinois and Northwestern games.
Maturi's options appear to be limited if he can't convince MLB to share the dome with the Gophers on those dates. There are no other football facilities in the state that could host the 50,000 or so fans the Gophers are hoping to draw for each game, meaning the games might have to be played in Michigan, either on the UM/MSU campuses or at Detroit's Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions.
