"It feels good to get it off my shoulders," he said. "Now I can focus on high school and grades and stuff like that."
One of the things that caused Godwin to commit now was a recent visit to the University of Minnesota.
"I liked it a lot," he said. "I liked everything that went on there. I liked the coaching staff a lot. The fanbase, they were also a huge factor."
The Minnesota coaches were ecstatic to hear the news that Godwin wanted to be a Gopher.
"Coach Kill was excited," he said. "I called them [Tuesday] night then I called them again [Wednesday] to confirm it and he was really excited."
Although he had offers from South Florida, Central, and West Virginia, Godwin opted to commit to the Gophers for a variety of reasons.
"It was a lot of things," he said. "I liked the coaching staff, but I also liked the conference. The Big Ten is a really good conference. They play on national TV every week. I really like the rebuilding part of it. They've got a really nice stadium, locker room, and weight room. They have all the things I need to be successful."
Another small part of his decision came when friend and fellow Florida native Eric Carter picked the Gophers over the weekend.
"I talk to Eric all the time," he said. "After he committed I kind of felt like I wanted to join him. He wasn't the reason why I committed but he was a factor. It's always great to go somewhere with somebody you know."
Although the Gophers already have talent in the secondary, Godwin feels he will bring a dynamic presence when he dons the Maroon and Gold.
"I'm a physical defensive back," he said. "I'm versatile so I'll play either safety, corner, or even go down into the box a little bit if I put on some weight. So I can help the defense a lot. They said my position will be determined in camp and how fast I can learn the defense."
